Learn Russian with Stories: Baba Yaga. Learn Russian with Russian from Russia! Russian fairy tales are fascinating. Recently I’ve re-read a lot of them and decided to share with you their charm. Today I’m talking about my favourite Russian folk tale character – Baba Yaga 🙂
Баба-яга is an ugly old woman, who possesses magical items and magical powers. In a number of fairy tales, she is a witch. Most often she is a negative character, but sometimes she acts as an assistant to the hero. She is also found in Czech and Slovak tales, not only in Russian. However, it is interesting that in some other countries she exists, but she is not a folk tale character. For example, in Serbia, she is a night spirit. Does Baba Yaga exist in your country and what is she like?
